Earthing Standards & References
Earthing in India is governed by published standards, not by supplier opinion. We don’t republish or paraphrase them — the Bureau of Indian Standards holds the copyright and maintains the current text. This page simply points you at the right document, and tells you what each one actually governs.
The Governing Code
IS 3043 — Code of Practice for Earthing
The single document that governs earthing system design and installation in India. The current edition is IS 3043 : 2018 (Second Revision). It covers earth electrodes, earthing conductors, soil resistivity, permissible earth resistance, bonding and the measurement of earthing systems — and it is the clause your consultant, electrical inspector and client will all cite.
Every plate, pipe and strip we supply is sized and certified against it.
Material Standards
What Each Standard Actually Governs
IS 3043 tells you how to design the earthing system. These tell you what the metal in it has to be. Our Material Test Certificates reference the relevant one on this list.
| Standard | Title | What it governs | Official source |
|---|---|---|---|
| IS 3043 : 2018 | Code of Practice for Earthing | Earthing system design, electrodes, earth resistance, bonding, testing. The master code. | BIS → |
| IS 2062 | Hot Rolled Medium and High Tensile Structural Steel | The steel our GI earthing strip is rolled from — chemistry and mechanical properties. | BIS → |
| IS 613 | Copper Rods and Bars for Electrical Purposes | Purity and conductivity requirements for copper earthing strip. | BIS → |
| IS 1239 | Steel Tubes, Tubulars and Other Wrought Steel Fittings | The tube spec behind GI earthing pipe electrodes. | BIS → |
| IS 4759 | Hot-Dip Zinc Coatings on Structural Steel and Other Allied Products | The galvanising itself — coating mass, i.e. how much zinc is actually on your GI strip. | BIS → |
| IS 2629 | Recommended Practice for Hot-Dip Galvanizing of Iron and Steel | How the galvanising is to be carried out. | BIS → |
| IS 732 | Code of Practice for Electrical Wiring Installations | The wider installation code that earthing sits inside. | BIS → |
| IS/IEC 62305 | Protection Against Lightning | Lightning protection earthing — a separate discipline from power-system earthing, often confused with it. | BIS → |
| SP 7 : 2016 | National Building Code of India (NBC) 2016 | Part 8 “Building Services” carries the electrical installation provisions that reference earthing. | BIS → |

Statutory & Regulatory
The Rules With Legal Force
Indian Standards are the technical reference. These are the instruments an electrical inspector actually enforces.
CEA (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations, 2023
The statutory safety regulations for electrical installations in India. They define earthing, and set out the supplier’s and the consumer’s obligations — including that consumers above 250 V must provide their own earthing system with an independent electrode.

Calculators Built On These Clauses
Reading the standard is one thing; sizing to it is another. Our calculators are free and need no sign-up.
Our tools are engineering aids, not a substitute for the standard or for a qualified consultant’s sign-off. Where a tool and IS 3043 disagree, IS 3043 wins.
