Copper vs GI Earthing: How to Choose
When electrical consultants sit down to specify an earthing system, the choice of conductor material is one of the first branches in the decision tree. You write the BOQ that contractors will eventually buy against — getting the material right from the start decides the safety and longevity of the installation.
The decision between copper and galvanised iron (GI) should be application-driven, not budget-driven. Both metals provide a controlled path to earth for fault current; their differing characteristics dictate where each belongs.

The Workhorse
When GI is the right answer
For the vast majority of residential, commercial and industrial installations, GI earthing strip is the correct and standard specification.
The base steel is manufactured to IS 2062, hot-dip galvanised for corrosion resistance underground. A 15–25 year service life matches the maintenance lifecycle of most conventional buildings. And where copper's conductivity advantage matters less than thermal capacity, engineers simply specify a larger GI section:
- 25×6 mm — the standard default for apartments, villas and commercial buildings.
- 50×6 mm — where fault levels rise: large commercial, industrial earthing.
- Up to 75×12 mm — heavy industrial, substation and grid-scale profiles.
GI is the proven workhorse. If the environment is not aggressively corrosive and the design permits the section the maths requires, GI is the pragmatic engineering choice — and the honest recommendation for most projects.
The Premium Case
When copper earns its premium
Copper costs more, and its price moves daily with the copper market. It earns that premium where conductivity, space and longevity are all working against you at once.
Manufactured to IS 613, copper strip carries roughly six times the conductivity of GI, and its higher material constant (k-factor) in the adiabatic sizing maths means a smaller copper section can meet the same thermal minimum — valuable where routing space is tight.
Copper is the preferred specification for critical infrastructure:
- Hospitals and data centres — environments with sensitive electronics and life-critical equipment, where low long-term earthing resistance and a 50+ year service life justify the premium.
- Substations and power infrastructure — high prospective fault currents and installations designed for decades of service.
Copper's natural corrosion resistance is also the sensible choice where the earthing run will be buried under permanent structure — where digging it up again in twenty years is not a realistic option.

The misconception that bites BOQs
The most common mistake at BOQ stage: swapping copper for GI (or the reverse) without recalculating the thermal minimum.
Conductor sizing is calculated, not guessed — from prospective fault current and duration, using the adiabatic method: S = I√t / k. Copper and GI have different material constants (k-factors), so the same fault demands a different section from each metal. And while IEC 60364-5-54 provides the adiabatic k-factors, IS 3043 uses different constants and can require a larger conductor than the IEC maths suggests.
