How earthing strip weight is calculated

For standard sizes, this calculator uses the Global Electric Company weight chart (kilograms per metre) — the same weights we quote and invoice from. The total is then:

total weight (kg) = chart weight per metre (kg/m) × total length (m)
total length (m) = length per piece × quantity

For a custom or off-chart size, weight per metre is computed from the nominal cross-section: width (mm) × thickness (mm) × density ÷ 1000, using GI = 7.85 g/cm³ and Copper = 8.90 g/cm³ — bare metal, no coating.

Chart vs theory — they are not the same number, and here is why. Our chart is the trade quoting basis, not the physics figure. GI chart values sit about 2% above bare steel because hot-dip galvanising adds zinc (effectively a ~8.0 g/cm³ basis rather than 7.85). Copper chart values are rounded trade figures and also run slightly above theoretical. So the chart will always read a little heavier than the custom calculation for the same size. The chart is what we invoice against; if you need the exact figure for a tender, ask us and we will confirm it in writing.

How do you calculate GI earthing strip weight?
Total weight = chart weight per metre (kg/m) × total length in metres (length per piece × quantity). For standard sizes we use the Global Electric Company weight chart; for custom sizes we estimate from width × thickness × density (GI 7.85, Copper 8.90 g/cm³).

Our chart figures effectively include it: GI chart weights sit about 2% above bare steel, which is the zinc. The custom calculation uses bare-metal density (7.85 g/cm³) and so excludes it — which is why a custom result reads slightly lighter than the chart for the same size.
