How earthing pipe weight is calculated

For standard sizes, this calculator uses the IS 1239 (Part 1) standard nominal weight per metre for GI tubes — the same basis the mill rolls and we quote from. The total is then:

weight per metre (kg/m) = IS 1239 nominal mass for the NB & class
total weight (kg) = kg/m × total length (m)
total length (m) = length per pipe × quantity

Galvanised and black pipe carry the same IS 1239 nominal mass (the zinc coating is included) — unlike flat strip, where the trade-standard weight excludes the coating. For a non-standard pipe, weight per metre is estimated from the cross-section:

kg/m ≈ π/4 × ( OD² − (OD − 2t)² ) × 7.85 ÷ 1000

where OD is the outside diameter (mm), t the wall thickness (mm) and 7.85 g/cm³ the density of steel. Custom results are flagged as estimates.

Frequently asked questions

How much does 40mm GI earthing pipe weigh per metre?
A 40 NB (40 mm) medium-class GI pipe weighs 3.56 kg per metre as the IS 1239 (Part 1) standard nominal weight. Light class is 3.23 kg/m and heavy class is 4.37 kg/m, so a 3 m medium pipe is about 10.7 kg.
What is the difference between medium and heavy class GI pipe?
Class is the wall thickness under IS 1239. For the same nominal bore, heavy class has a thicker wall and a higher weight per metre (40 NB: light 3.23, medium 3.56, heavy 4.37 kg/m). Medium is the usual choice for pipe earthing electrodes; heavy is used where extra mechanical strength is needed.
Is the galvanizing included in the pipe weight?
Yes. The IS 1239 nominal mass is the same for galvanised (GI) and black pipe, so the standard nominal weight already accounts for it — distinct from flat strip, where the trade-standard weight excludes the zinc coating.
What length are GI earthing pipes supplied in?
